The stain is downstream of the problem. Finding the source means thinking about what is above it.
When water comes through a ceiling from a floor above, the visible damage is at the end of the journey rather than the start. Water travels along joists and across the top of the ceiling board until it finds a seam, a fixture penetration or a low point. That means the source can be several feet from the stain and occasionally in a different room. Narrowing it down is a matter of asking what is above and what was running when it happened.

Work out what is directly above
Go upstairs and stand where the stain is below. What is there? A bathroom is the most common answer, and within a bathroom the candidates are a shower pan or its surround, a toilet seal, a supply line to a fixture, or a drain connection. A kitchen above means a sink, a dishwasher or a refrigerator line. A laundry means a washing machine hose or its drain. If there is nothing above but roof, the diagnosis changes entirely and you are looking at the building envelope rather than plumbing. If the room above is another dwelling unit, you cannot investigate directly and building management has to be involved.
Use the timing to narrow it
Does the stain grow when someone showers? That points at the shower pan, the surround, or a drain connection rather than a supply line, because a supply line leaks continuously under pressure whether or not anyone is using it. Does it grow steadily with nobody upstairs? That is a supply line or a constant-pressure connection. Does it grow only during rain? Then despite there being a room above, water may be entering the building envelope and travelling. Each of these tests is free and takes a day, and the answer changes which trade you call.
Why not to puncture the ceiling
The common advice to poke a hole and let the water out puts a person directly beneath a suspended load of water, next to a ceiling fixture and its wiring, holding something sharp. Restoration contractors do release trapped water deliberately, but they do it with the area cleared and protected, the circuit isolated, and a plan for where the water goes. If a ceiling is bulging, the correct homeowner response is to empty the room, keep everyone out and call. The material cost of a failed ceiling is small compared with the cost of being under it.
What the repair involves
The source is repaired first — plumber or roofer depending on the diagnosis — and a good restoration contractor will decline to close the ceiling before that is done. Then the cavity is opened enough to remove wet insulation and to get air moving through it. The framing and the underside of the floor above are dried to a measured standard. Only then is the ceiling closed, patched and finished. The finishing is frequently the largest part of a small ceiling job, because matching texture and paint across an existing ceiling plane is difficult and often means redoing the whole plane.

The stain has stopped growing. Is the leak fixed?
Not necessarily. A leak that only occurs when a fixture is used will appear to stop whenever that fixture is not being used. A rain-driven leak stops when the rain does. Before concluding the problem is resolved, reproduce the conditions — run the shower for a while, or check again after the next storm — and get a moisture reading on the ceiling.
The leak is coming from my neighbour's apartment. What are my options?
Report it to building management in writing immediately with photographs and a time, because access to the source requires their authorisation and the written record establishes when it started.
